The city of Nakhichevan was first mentioned in ptolemy's "Geography" as Naksuana and was said to be established in 4400 A.D. Naksuana is ancient Greek for "the land of sweet water". Since it freqeuntly changed empires, sultanates, and khanates, the name of Nakhichevan was altered many times, changing to: Nakshi jahan (the of the world), Nuh chikhan (the place where Noah landed), Nesheva and etc. Throughout history Nakhichevan land brought up famous persons such as Hindushah ibn Naxchivani, Abdurrakhman en Neshevi, Ekmouluddin Naxchivani, Ecemi Naxcivani, General Ehsan, Kelbali, Huseyinqulu khan Naxchivanskie's and others.

After it was mostly destroyed by the Persians in the 4th century, Nakhichevan sank into comparative insignificance, managing to recover by the 10th century. Because of its geographic position, it frequently suffered during the wars between Persia and the Ottoman Empire. The Nakhichevan khanate emerged in the region in 1747 after the death of Afshar ruler Nadir Shah. After the two Russo-Iranian wars and the Treaty of Turkmenchay, Nakhichevan khanate passed into Russian possession in 1828.

Due to dissatisfaction with USSR's policies, the parliament of the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic unilaterally declared independence from the USSR in 1990, and joined the newly independent Republic of Azerbaijan a year later. It now exists and is internationally recognized as a part of Azerbaijan govered by its own elected parliament and chairman of the parliament.
