After centuries of Swedish and Russian rule, Estonia attained independence in 1918. Forcibly incorporated into the USSR in 1940, it regained its freedom in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Since the last Russian troops left in 1994, Estonia has been free to promote economic and political ties with Western Europe.

Bezpośrednie połączenie lotnicze między Warszawą a Bukaresztem obsługiwane jest przez rumuńskie linie TAROM (Transporturile Aeriene Romane) i PLL LOT. Samoloty latają codziennie; czas przelotu wynosi ok. 2,5 godz.

Obecnie jedynym bezpośrednim pociągiem z Polski do Rumunii są Karpaty. Pociąg wyjeżdża codziennie z Warszawy o 6.05. Trasa ptrowadzi przez Kraków (8.50), Tarnów (9.55), Nowy Sącz (11.35), Koszyce (15.20), Miskolc (17.10), Arad (0.12) i Krajową (6.52). W Bukareszcie pociąg jest o 9.32. Bilet zagraniczny kupuje się w droższej taryfie międzynarodowej.
